This map shows the separation between the two countries, after the war. The 38th parallel separates the two countries, the border includes a 160 mile long stretch of demilitarized zone as well as a meeting point where the two countries sometimes negotiate.
When Korea was divided the capital for South Korea became Seoul. Seoul is the largest city in South Korea,it is considered to be a mega city since the population is about 10 million people. In 1950, North Korea had control of Seoul during the Korean War and the entire city was destroyed. On March 1951, the United Nations regained control Seoul which has rebuild and grown.
In 1948 Pyongyang became the capital for North Korea. During the Korean War, between October and December of 1950 South Korea had Control of it. Pyongyang was severely damaged in 1952 when U.S. targeted the city for the largest aerial raid of the entire war which involved 1,400 U.S. aircrafts. After the war the capital was completely destroyed. There were discussions of relocating the capital but it was decided to rebuild from the ashes.
